DMH Design Studio in KCMO
Old Westinghouse fan, Nick gave this assignment to me. I used the Canon Mark III 1Ds with a 90mm tilt shift lens, this gave the base of the fan an out of focus look. I used two photos here, I shot the fan blades still and then turned the fan on and shot the blades moving.
The Set…Here you can see the set, I was shooting connected to my computer so that I could get instant feedback. I used two light, the first one with a small softbox, a little behind the the fan so that I could give it a little depth, and the second light I used had a 20 degree honeycomb, with a sheet of spun glass in front of the light to diffuse the light a tiny bit. This diffuses the light but not as much as a softbox does. I also used a half stop shim to knock down some of the light hitting the table.
Here are some photos that I shoot during a play around session in the studio. We were just having a little fun during some of our down time.
The set up for both of these images, was a medium softbox over the camera, a small softbox for a hair light, there was a light facing the background with a 20 degree honey comb, also to the left of the camera facing Michael creating the high lights on his face.
Let me know what you think. thanks JD
Nick just got a new toy, a comet ring light; Comet is the brand of light and packs that he uses. I was the test subject for a pre-light we were doing for the next days shoot using the ring light. Here is a photo that he shot of me.

In this photo we used four lights,
The first light was the main light, which was the ring lights; you can see the catch light of the ring light right in my eyes. What we found that the ring light made everything so flat and it gave a really cool shadow effect around the portrait, but that wasn’t the look Nick was going for. So we added a small softbox on a boom arm right over my head which gave a little depth to this portrait. You can see the nice highlights that this light gave us at the top of my head and shoulders. Nick still didn’t like that and added two more lights that were behind me a little and pointed them towards the back of my ears, which gave us the nice highlights on either side of my face. Both of these lights had 7in. reflectors and 20 degree honeycombs in them so that we could narrow down the amount of light that covered my face. Nick shot this with the new Canon 1Ds Mark III, which is an amazing camera, I’m a Nikon shooter, but I’m starting to love Canon. We were shooting raw, and getting file sizes around 50-55MB. Crazy. So in the end Nick liked my portrait, but didn’
t like the set up that we spent about an hour on, this morning for the shoot, we shot a rugby player, and two younger models, the set was almost completely different.
Hey Everyone,
This post is long over due. For all of you who don’t know I finally took that next step in my life. Since I graduated in May, I have been confused about the world of photography, I haven’t been able to figure out what I want to do with Photography. I have recently moved out of Columbia, which will be missed, it was a great six year there, but it was time to move back to a big city. I’m living in Kansas City, Missouri now in the Plaza. For the next four months I will be interning with world renowned Photographer Nick Vedros, at Vedros and Associates. www.vedros.com. He is a high end Commercial/Advising Photographer.
So far I love the internship, I will be finishing my second week today. In these passed two weeks, we have done amazing shoots for big clients, like Wal Mart, Frebreze, and Bayer; those are just some of the clients that he shoots for. I’m excited about what’s in the future, I have learned so much already not just about photography, but about everything that goes into getting a shoot booked to the finished product.
Nick is an Amazing man, who is very caring about his friends and family and is always willing to help you out, he’ll explain everything that he is doing on a set, even if the Art director or clients is around, he wants you to know what and why he does things.
I’m interning with two other guys, Michael Stines, and Nick Vedros Jr., both who just Graduated from Full Sail, in Orlando. Mike and Nick are both Cinemaographer, I’m looking forward to assisting them and learning as much as I can about film, which is something that I have always wanted to do.
I was scared and very worried about leaving Columbia and starting this new step, but as of right now I love it here, I miss everyone and if you need my new address shoot me an email. Throughout this internship I will be blogging about what I’m doing and updating my recent work.
Happy Holidays,
John DePrisco
